Field Trip: Letters to Afar at Museum of the City of New York

On December 7, we met at the Museum of the City of New York to experience the remarkable exhibit Letters to Afar, By Péter Forgács, with music by the Klezmatics.

The exhibit is "an immersive video art installation based on home movies made by New York City’s Jewish immigrants who traveled back to visit Poland during the 1920s and 30s".

The films document poignant family reunions and everyday life in small towns in the years before the Second World War, capturing a culture on the brink.

We began in one of the museum’s classrooms, where younger students began with an immigration story and older students discussed the exhibit’s historical context and film techniques.

Then parents and children had a chance to explore, write, draw and respond to this powerful installation.

Many thanks to MCNY for making this tremendous day possible.
