Martin Luther King Day 2013

Social justice teacher and organizer Hannah Temple led our annual event to honor Martin Luther King's birthday.  

Kids and parents created a timeline and discussed the role of Jews in the Civil Rights Movement. Jonah read from his letter to the Freedom Riders, and the Vov class showed the movie they made about debates among Southern Jews (for lessons inspiring these see the Jewish Women’s Archive Living the Legacy curriculum:

We asked how people are organizing against racism today, and looked at the current campaign for fair policing by Jews for Racial and Economic Justice [] that has been a source in this year’s social justice curriculum.  

All joined in protest songs in Yiddish and English, and Shayna and Davie treated us to a violin duet of “We Shall Overcome.”
